Working at Height Regulation:2005

This legislation is wide ranging covering many aspects of working at height including, scaffolding, working platforms, fall arrest and fall protection systems.

The usual hierarchy for prevention of risk should be used, ie.

  • Avoid working at height.
  • Use equipment to prevent falls including collective protection.
  • Use equipment to minimise the distance and/or consequence of a fall.

In 2005, a change to regulations covering the use of anchoring devices has increased the minimum edge distance for brickwork to 280mm while in concrete it remains 150mm, therefore, reveal installations must be carefully considered.

One aspect of anchor device installation that is regularly overlooked is that the user of the device must not put themselves at risk to attach to the device, so external installations may need reviewing as the need to lean out of a window could fall under this requirement.
